Geometric Baby Quilt Pattern

I finished this quilt a year ago, and thought it would be a good challenge to make my own quilt pattern for it. I was curious if I could make one using the software I use to draft with at work.

I love the initial stages of figuring out a quilt and letting the fabric talk to you. When I started this particular quilt I had all the fabric bought and the general feel/mood of the quilt decided, I just had to figure out the perfect pattern. I sketched a lot of ideas with the fabric, sitting beautifully folded on the table, waiting for me. I would glance over at the smooth pretty stack for inspriation. Pinterest also helped with inspiration:

In the end, I decided to use a pattern I saw on an Urban Outfitters quilt, a quilt I fell in love with and ended up buying later, when it went on sale. When it came in the mail I was suprised to see that it wasn't a pieced-together quilt... it was just patterned fabric! For some reason that discovery made me proud that I actually pieced this baby quilt together. And I LOVE how it turned out, I think the colors next to the black and white are stunning.

I'm also proud of this pattern I drafted. I think it's easy to understand, will help you know the EXACT amount of fabric you need (which is the trickiest part for me), and the order to sew the squares together. One day I will probably use this pattern again on something... and I will be glad I have it saved.

Note: This pattern is for sewing the quilt top portion only. I have NOT included instructions for a border, backing, binding, or actual "quilting", but you can find those instructions anywhere online.

(for my border and back I used patterened fabric squares which matched the solid colors I used, I had the quilt professionally quilted, and then I hand-bound the sides)

If you wanted to make a larger queen-sized quilt, you could make four of these "baby quilts" and then sew them together to create your own version of the Kaleidoscope Quilt. With different borders around the sections, the possibilities are endless!

Proper Paper Snowflakes

Fact. Taping proper paper snowflakes on windows helps promote a good snow year.

If you didn't have parents that spent time teaching you the proper way to make snowflakes, my deepest sympathies friend, it's cry'n shame. This sort of stuff breaks my heart, but here's your chance to finally learn. And after this quick post you will be able to teach your own children the right way and hopefully the cycle of rectangle snowflakes and snowflakes with 3 points, or 8, can finally end.

I believe that if you are from a part of the world where it snows, and especially if you love to snowboard, then being able to quickly cut out a 6 pointed snowflake is a skill you must own.

Here's how to fold a proper snowflake with the proper 6 points:

After you get the pattern down, then you can start to get tricky...

Utah Snowboard Season - Opening Days!

Brighton opened today! Yay!

I was so excited about the snowboard season while reading the dates of all the resorts opening here in Utah, that I decided to make a calendar to print out and hang up in my cubicle...

Here, it's free if you would like to download it, print it out, and get excited as well...

Sharing Time Pt. 6

I can't let the fall end without sharing one of my favorite fall printables:

FREE download via Whipperberry

My new favorite useful app is called BandsInTown [ apple | andriod ]
I love that it shows you every band that is coming to town, and where they will be playing... I will never miss a concert again!

And here's some other random things I've stumbled upon that are worth sharing with ya'll:
1 if you want a cute shower curtain they can be expensive. when I found this one I was blown away at the price... and ordered it right away. I think it's so pretty for a woodsy bathroom.

2 while listening to talk radio I heard an ad for this cider... I checked out their website and loved what I saw, mouth-watering ciders with beautiful packaging. I am a big fan of unique fun drinks to have at parties and social gatherings... I hope to have a reason to celebrate with some of this cider soon.

3 most adorable tents ever click here | and here | and here  for some of my favorites. They also have a really fun instagram feed worth following @fieldcandy

4 I bought these facial towelettes this week and love the fresh clean feeling I immediatly had after using one. They remove dirt, oil and makeup without having to rinse, I can't wait to use them on my next camping trip!

5 fleece throw blankets from Ikea... the squigly line one is $1.99!!?!... I repeat, $1.99!!!.. and measures 51" x 63"... the others are $3.99 and measure a little bit bigger. How they are selling such a large amount of fleece for such a little tiny price! The only bummer is that you can't order them online, you have to purcharse them at their store. I think the red and white ones would make awesome inexpensive Christmas presents... just add some personal embelishments, like jingle bells or something. squiggly lines | white | red

Sharing Time Pt. 4

Jones Design Company has a FREE autumn essentials print. And it's adorable.

I love this fleece by Burton:

Bee boots from Target online:

The color of this Henrika Throw Blanket is fantastic, and only 14.99 from Ikea:
I have to share this little guy... little lego davy crockett!

For me, I'm not sure why, but I associate beautiful chignons and braided buns as part of Fall. I plan to work on my bun skills this season, and my crown braids... because I think they are gorgeous. I love how they look with plaid shirts for hiking treks (see the photo below), or for pulling back your hair while baking, shooting guns, or harvesting tomatoes.

Every night, post dinner, we have been drinking and loving this...

Honey Vanilla Chamomile, it is tasty tasty and has been really hitting the spot.

Also, a couple weeks ago we were visiting Mike's family in Idaho... where his brother's father-in-law, who is 100% Persian, drank tea with his wife every night and told us that we Americans are weird for using ceramic mugs for our tea... glass, for total transparency, is the only way to go, it allows you to see if the tea has been properly seeped.
I like this mug, even though glass tea cups feel un-patriotic to me:

And there ya go... sharing is caring, Happy Friday!
