My absolute favorite Coen Brother movie... we have reached the summit: True Grit
I have been looking forward to when I could watch this again and feel the completeness of having seen this club through to the end. It feels pretty dang good crossing all these movies off the list. Now I get to sit back, twiddle my thumbs, and wait for their next movie.
Truth be told, Dan and I watched this movie over a month ago... but last night we watched John Wayne and the Cowboys... so as I type this I am in a cowboy mood...
Honestly any Coen movie that comes out following True Grit has a lot to live up to in my mind. Not only did I love the time period, story, characters, and style of this film... it has a lot of good memories for me too. I loved how my whole family was excited to see it Christmas Day, and how we watched the trailer over and over again with that Johnny Cash song. We all enjoyed it so much we went and saw it again a few days later... this time with extended family, and Grandpa Gene came too. I loved Patty saying "we got to get grandpa there on time, he loves a good hanging scene" and that Grandpa sat next to my dad and laughed during the movie during all the right parts (and could understand Rooster better than I could).
Rooster's accent was amazing (Coen movies and awesome accents!). My mom says he sounded just like one of her old cowboy uncles.
I love all the characters, and the banter between them all... something the Coens are good at writing and bringing to life. Even though this follows almost word for word a western novel, and was not written by the Coens, the quick wit and expression flowed so naturally throughout the entire story. It felt so real and seamless to me. I tear up at a couple parts every time I watch it, both are because of sweet brave Mattie Ross... love that girl and her grit.
This movie... so western, so coen brothers, sooo perfect.
I think I will do another separate post and wrap up this club, officially. Here are some movie stills for your viewing pleasure, and if you haven't seen this movie recently... or worse yet, if you haven't bothered to see it at all.... do yourself a favor and find a copy now. For some reason watching westerns when it's cold outside seems the right thing to do. Cuddle up on your sofa, put this in and enjoy some top notch film, perhaps with some hot tea or a little knitting.
