CBMWC Part IX: Blood Simple

So we are going in an interesting order, and I blame Blockbuster. Well, I blame Blockbuster going out of business... when Blockbuster completely goes out of business I may have to get the internet at my house so I can have netflix. Oh and buy a lap top. And I might as well start drinking beer every night because my life productivity is going to go way down when that happens. The internet is addicting, I'm glad I don't have it at my house.

But lets move on, shall we? To the movie: Blood Simple. The first Coen Brothers film to hit the cinemas... their debut really. This movie came out in 1984, and I don't know why Mike and I decided to skip it when we started this club. We didn't think it was important, but later decided we better watch it. After doing a little research found out that it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1985. How bout that?

This movie definitely has a Coen Brothers feel to it. It was fun going back to an older film they did after progressing through the years. It is similar to all the older ones we had watched, but also had the same feel as No Country For Old Men, one of my favorites and most recent ones. The Coen Brothers are good at that heavy and disturbing feel.

There aren't very many characters in this movie, not even many extras... probably because it's just a small low-budget film. It just has the essential characters and a good thick story. At one point, early in the movie, Mike was like "um, are all the people in this movie dead? they are running out of characters". And seriously, in the end, only one of them is alive.

Frances McDormand (the same lady in Fargo, and Joel Cowen's wife) is pretty amazing in this movie. Especially in this scene, which was one of the more disturbing scenes in this movie (much like the wood chipper scene in Fargo):

I loved it. For their first movie I am impressed, and glad we finally watched it.

  1. I haven't seen a single one of these movies. Once you've seen them all I want your number 1 recommendation and then I will watch it- promise.

  2. I think the challenge would be picking the one that you would like the most... I'm not even sure what sort of movies you like?

  3. To be honest I'm not even sure I like any movies. I mean, I probably only watched 3 movies last year (at home or in theaters- yet I can't think of any.)
