5. She Wears Flannel

An old soft flannel shirt is the hallmark of a good proper mountain woman. A flannel she's had forever, that has grown softer and softer over the years, and will never be thrown out because it fits her like a hug from an old friend. A proper mountain woman WEARS FLANNEL.

A high-quality flannel shirt isn't cheap, but it can last you a lifetime. These days a flannel shirt might get mistaken for any shirt with a plaid (or tartan) pattern... but a proper mountain woman knows the difference. A real flannel shirt is made from a soft woven fabric (usually cotton or wool), and brushed with a fine metal brush that raises the fine fibers of the fabric, giving you that soft cozy feel. Some flannel shirts are double napped, which means that both sides have been brushed so the inside and the outside of the shirt are velvety soft, thick and warm. The joy a traditional high-quality flannel will last forever, and it also can serve as a practical (and perfect) go-to outfit for a whole slew of proper mountain woman occasions.

Appropriate times to wear your flannel:
riding horses
baking in the kitchen
cuddling up to watch your favorite western film (or favorite wes anderson film)
apple picking
whenever you are feeling lazy
whenever you are feeling chilly
christmas parties and holiday get-togethers
up at the cabin
long drives to your favorite diner
on first dates
hiking in the fall
to the farmers market in the early morning
family pictures
ice-skating
walking your dog
going to the grocery store
vacations and holidays
bowling
museum trips
thrift shopping
anytime you visit the pacific northwest
deep sea fishing
brunch
casual Friday at the office
concerts
running errands
the gun range
shed hunting
puttering around the house
weekends, in general

North To Alaska

Andie is back in Alaska this summer, and she has written a post on what to pack if you are also planning on heading up North.

WHAT TO PACK TO ALASKA
by: Andie

This is what I packed for my summer, some "must haves" to be the proper Alaskan mountain woman:

Rain Boots - this is an obvious one, it rains a ton Ketchikan and you got to have some rain boots - the locals all wear Tufs

Moccasins - every proper mountain girl needs her a few pairs of moccasins. A lightweight shoe perfect for exploring or shopping at the local Safeway.

Adventure Pack
  • canteen with the perfect trail mix
  • trusty knife
  • nalgeen
  • lens for my phone - easy clip on fish eye
  • your lucky adventure hat

Warm Flannels - they are a must in the mountains, lets get real.

Other Proper Gear -
  • warm hoodie to layer under all my different rain coats. I found the best hoodie at H&M in the guys section. It has a big turtle neck on it, I can wear it with my rain jacket hood up and it keeps my neck warm. The layering look is my favorite, it's a more thoughtful and interesting look.
  • I found the perfect Levi jacket and ended up cutting off the sleeves. For those overcast cold days with no rain.
  • and, of course, rain jackets! You can't have too many of them. Again, one of my favorites comes from the guy section at H&M. I like my jackets to be light weight and have deep pockets for my hands.

Proper Mountain Woman Flannel Pt. 1

"Everyone needs a reliable flannel shirt." - Kylee Burgin, founder of Rope Souls.

True words... but especially true for a modern day mountain woman. A go-to flannel shirt has always been a staple for outdoorsy hipster folk, and now, with current trends, it's even easier to find a good flannel shirt because everyone is wearing em' and selling em'. We should all be stocking our closets!

What I love about a good flannel shirt is that it's western, mountainy, AND wintery... it looks cute under your snowboard gear, on a hiking trail, or to a christmas party. Anywhere you want to go, anything you got to do... a flannel shirt will be the answer when you don't know what to wear. Bonus points because they are so soft and comfy.

Here's a quick round up of some of this years flannel:
