(I love this kid, and this scene)
Alger and I laughed and giggled throughout this whole movie. I love the quick dialogue scenes so much, the Coen brothers are good at that. I've also decided that the Coen brothers likey their cigars! Every movie thus far has had some good cigar smoking scenes.... or just smoking scenes in general. Makes me wish I hadn't given it up...
The movie is about a company called Hudsucker that is looking for an idiot to be their "proxy" president just till "January 1st" only "thirty days", "four weeks", "a month at most". They find the idiot, hire him.. and then the idiot destroys their plans by idiotically inventing the hula hoop.
Favorite scene from the movie is when the idiot president is trying to save Paul Newman's character (Mr. Mussburger) from falling out the window by holding onto his pants... which are ripping... and Paul Newman is hanging there thinking about this conversation he had with his tailor about his pants:
- Luigi: Mr. Moose-burger, I give-a you pants a nice-a dooble stitch, eh? Make 'em strong, and they look-a real sharp.
- Sidney J. Mussburger: No! Single stitch is fine.
- Luigi: But the double stitch will last forever.
- Sidney J. Mussburger: Why on earth would I need a double stitch? To pad your account? Single stitch is fine.
- [Cut to Later]
- Luigi (To himself, alone, sewing the pants): Ah, what the heck. Mr. Moose-burger is such a nice-a man, I give him double stitch anyway. That's some strong stitch, you bet.
- Oh.... so funny. The movie has some weird super-natural stuff sprinkled in every now and then, it was strange, but just made me laugh - which is what I think it's supposed to. I liked it.
I grew up watching this movie, and I have to tell you--it is one of my very, very favorites. So great! You know, for kids.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this movie. Is it an oldie? Just wondering, were you wearing only burlap when you biked? Brings quite a picture to the imagination. I did mention that it doesn't block much. lol!
ReplyDeletethis is my favorite Coen Brothers film. They have a tendency to split me down the middle.
ReplyDeleteSome of them are too dark for me. Too mean. I always think they are genius and well made works of art, but they have a tendency to make me laugh at horrible things and then feel bad about it later. (Fargo, The Man Who Wasn't There, Burn After Reading)
But Hudsucker is my favorite and I really think their work is amazing.
