Making Mamaliga With Mama

Sunday night in Shreveport Louisiana we found ourselves surrounded by mounds of candy left over from Naomi's birthday party with not much of an appetite, but feeling like we should eat some real food for dinner.
While we were wondering about what foods to eat, Claudia mentioned how in Romania they used to drink tea at night, which got me wistfully thinking of one of my favorite romanian dishes - mămăligă! I've never been able to make it right when I've tried here in the states. As soon as I mentioned mămăligă aloud (forgetting I was in a home where romanain dreams come true) that's all we could think about, and it was decided that is what we were having. I was delighted.
Delighted even more when Claudia attempted to teach me how to make it: watch here (the movie is hilarious, this lady is a riot)
Naomi's dad made a quick trip to the store to get some sour cream (trebui smântână!!), and we got out all the cheeses...

and I declared that it would be the best meal of our lives!!!

It was prefect.

It hit the spot.

I love mămăligă.

Thank you, Constantinescus! Seriously, one of the highlights of my trip!

  2. It's like Romanians take on Polenta... just corn mush you add cream cheese and sour cream to. I love it.
